Summary of 5 listed contractors for septic tank emptying in shropshire

Who empties septic tanks in Shropshire

Shropshire is one of the most rural counties in England, and a large share of its farms, villages and hamlets have never been on mains sewers. That makes tank emptying routine work here rather than a specialist call.

Two of our listed firms have yards in Telford. SPH Plant, at Horsehay, runs a fleet of more than 100 vehicles and does commercial cesspit rounds as well as homes. Tardis Environmental, at Halesfield, sends out large 26 to 32 tonne tankers and advertises same day and next day empties. Salop Drain Services works from Upton Magna, just east of Shrewsbury, and is the one to ask if you also want the tank checked or the T-pieces replaced. Severn Waste Services sits over the border at Dolfor near Newtown and covers west Shropshire and Mid Wales with a 3,000 gallon tanker. Euroloo, a national network, also has a page for Shrewsbury.

Which firm for which job

For a plain empty on a site with good access, Tardis or SPH can usually move fastest. If your tank sits at the end of a narrow lane or across a field, ask each firm what size of vehicle it would send before you book, because a 26 tonne tanker will not reach every Shropshire cottage. If the tank keeps filling, smells or backs up, choose a firm that repairs as well as empties: Salop for T-pieces and roots, SPH for soakaways and porosity tests, Severn for a full replacement tank.

Rules that apply in Shropshire

Shropshire is in England, so the Environment Agency general binding rules apply. Since 2020 a septic tank must not discharge straight into a ditch, stream or river; it needs a drainage field, or an upgrade to a treatment plant. The firm that takes the sludge away must be a registered waste carrier. Building control for new or replacement systems sits with Shropshire Council, or Telford & Wrekin Council inside the borough.

If you are on the Welsh side near Oswestry, Clun or Knighton, check whether your property is in Wales. Welsh tanks fall under Natural Resources Wales instead, and Severn Waste can tell you which applies.

Getting a fair quote

None of these firms publishes a price, so ask each one the same questions: how many gallons the quote covers, whether disposal is included, the hose length and any charge for a second load. Most Shropshire households with a typical tank need an empty about once a year; heavy use or a small tank means more often.
