Who empties tanks in the North East
Outside Aberdeen and the larger towns, most homes in Aberdeenshire rely on a septic tank or treatment plant. Distances are long, so the base of each firm matters as much as its price.
Two listed firms are in Aberdeen itself. Taylors Industrial Services, founded in 1962 at Altens, answers its phones around the clock and empties household and business tanks on a schedule or in an emergency. Diamond Drainage, at Bridge of Don, goes further: it empties tanks and cesspits, clears treatment plant sludge and replaces failed tanks and soakaways. Universal Tankers runs a depot at Craigmyle Park in Kintore. A1 Clear Drainage works from near Fraserburgh, with crews named for towns from Elgin to Stonehaven, and gives its SEPA registration on its site. G50 Waste Management is a small family firm in Keith that quotes one set price with no mileage charge. Septic Tank Services Ltd, based at Lochgilphead, also lists 15 Aberdeenshire towns.
Which firm for which job
Around Aberdeen, Westhill, Portlethen and Stonehaven, the Aberdeen firms and the Kintore depot are closest. In Buchan, around Peterhead, Fraserburgh and Turriff, A1 Clear is the local choice. Towards Huntly, Keith and the Moray border, G50 is nearest. If the tank needs more than an empty, such as a blocked outlet, a soakaway that floods or a full replacement, Diamond Drainage covers that whole job.
Scottish rules, not English ones
Aberdeenshire is in Scotland, so the Scottish Environment Protection Agency regulates septic tanks and treatment plants, not the Environment Agency. SEPA expects private systems to be authorised, usually by registration. Ask your contractor to confirm your tank is registered before you sell or extend. Building warrants for new systems come from Aberdeenshire Council or Aberdeen City Council.
Scottish Water also offers a desludging service for some domestic tanks, with published charges. Compare its terms with a private firm if your tank meets its conditions.
Winter access
Book routine empties before winter. Snow, frost and soft ground can stop a tanker reaching a tank across a field, and rural roads in upper Deeside and the Cabrach can close for days. Tell the firm about any gate width or weight limit on a farm track.
