Compare the same service
Emptying, servicing, repair and installation are different jobs. A waste-removal price may not include inspection of pumps, controls or discharge arrangements. Write down the intended outcome, then give each contractor the same description. Ask a treatment-plant engineer whether desludging is included or needs a separate booking.
Check volume and access assumptions
Ask whether emptying is priced for a specified quantity, a tanker load or another basis. Find out how extra volume is measured and charged. Confirm any assumptions about parking, hose reach and easy access to the system. Mention known restrictions before accepting the quote, and ask what happens if the contractor cannot reach the tank on the day.
Ask for the full total
Request an itemised explanation of call-out, labour, parts, waste removal, disposal and VAT where applicable. For a fault, distinguish the cost of diagnosis from the later repair. Ask whether a return visit or additional equipment is charged separately. Do not compare an estimate for an inspection with a fixed quote for completed work as if they cover the same task.
Understand parts and installation work
For repairs, ask what component is proposed and how compatibility will be confirmed. For a replacement system, ask who supplies design information, assesses the site, addresses permissions, commissions the equipment and reinstates disturbed ground. Ask for the maintenance obligations and handover documents. A cheaper equipment price may omit substantial site work.
Decide how changes will be authorised
Agree that additional work needs approval before it proceeds, apart from any separately agreed emergency arrangements. Record the name of the person who can authorise changes. If the property is shared or managed, make the payment and approval arrangements clear. Ask what cancellation terms and deposit conditions apply, and retain a copy of the agreed scope.
Keep the records after the visit
Ask for an invoice and any service or survey report included in the agreement. Keep these with existing system documents. If the contractor identifies another problem, request an explanation of the finding, the evidence and the next recommended step. A directory listing does not verify that recommendation; you can seek another suitably qualified opinion before agreeing major work.
